You Don’t Have Time or …

It just isn’t your thing? Often times at 9RUN6 we get out and invite people to come join us for a workout, we hear a ton of different reasons why they cannot make it out at 5:30, 6:00 or 6:25AM. It’s okay if fitness isn’t your thing, we can’t force people to come out and find out what we are all about.

However, this morning we did have a new face join us. Welcome to the group Alex. He found us by way of the internets … He came out there and put himself about during the workout, pushing himself to the level he was able to do.

We also had our world traveler join us this morning. If you don’t follow Ms. Judy on social media, she has been all over the world doing various things including riding elephants!

The morning workout included some running and the deck of cards from hell workout. It was fun, fast and challenging. Those damn burpess get people every time!

So during the workout this morning a couple of announcements came up …

  1. if you want to order a custom buff this is the week to do so.
  2. we are starting a new tradition … everyone has an end of the year bash and it could mean for less attendance if we tried to cram on of our own into everyone’s schedules … so we are starting a new tradition coming January 2017 … a beginning of the year bash! more info to come.

My First Marathon: Melanie

A special blog report by Melanie!

On Sunday December 4th, the streets of Sacramento became a magical place filled with thousands of runners for the CIM. The crowds were cheering, the bands were playing and it was easy to forget that the finish line is almost in the exact spot where the 9run6 crew meets for its morning workouts. But it felt like coming home. 9run6 represented with about 10 people who completed the marathon. For at least three people, this was their first marathon ever, for others they were looking to accomplish either a personal best of a Boston Qualifying time.   Some members of 9run6 were not running the race but volunteered or cheered on the sidelines. Seeing those friendly faces along the course was priceless!

The weekend began on Saturday when members of 9run6 were spotted around the capitol all completing their final shake out runs and watching the tents and festivities get set up. On race morning, some member’s car pooled to the start while others took the traditional bus route. For a first-timer, like myself, the anxiety was starting to set in and I knew a long wait at the start could be enough to drive me mad. But luckily, the 9run6 crew travels in packs and I quickly found the crew at our designated meeting spot where they were able to talk me out of all of my anxiety, and before I knew it I was running the race. In my case, I was lucky to have someone volunteer to run with me for at least half of the race. This was a great support that not only helped the time pass for the first half, but kept me confident and my anxiety in check.

Before coming to 9run6 I really had no intention of ever running a marathon. Six short months later, I finished my first marathon at CIM. Working out with 9run6 was the first time it even occurred to me that maybe I could run a marathon and then later gave me the tools to prepare and the support to succeed. As the race concluded and the pictures on social media exploded, it was clear that everyone had a successful and meaningful race, whether they were able to qualify for Boston or finish. But just as quickly as the magic appeared, in the afternoon the streets went back to normal and the crowds disappeared. We are left with our memories and our medals thinking, wow did that really happen?

Dude did a bird …

It’s Friday, so everyone throw their hands in the air! Only after getting your morning workout in, that is! When you conquer the workout, basically you own the day. The squad did the normal gathering of the masses at 5:30 and 6:00 for the run group then at 6:25 before heading over the the International Peace Garden on the 15th Street side of the Capitol.

So during one of the run groups, our O.G. Brad 1.0 got shatted on by a bird … no not on the head, but on the front of the shirt. Gross? Yes. However, let’s break this down on how amazing it really is to have that done. Brad was not doing sit ups so he wasn’t on his back. Though that really isn’t out of the question because maybe he does them at stoplights to kill the time waiting for the crossing signal to turn green. Yes my friends we do wait for the light to signal us to go … well most of the time.

Here is a visual …

The workout this morning was a new one that involved three rounds of of 4 exercises with 30 reps of each set with about a 1 minute break between each one.

Great job everyone! Have a kick ass weekend. And don’t forget if you want to order a custom 9RUN6 tubular bandana get your pre-order in by CLICKING HERE.

Cold … The Doesn’t Stop Us!

Wednesday mornings are a delight when it rolls around. It is easy to hit the snooze button, but for 9RUN6 regulars, we look forward to gathering to get our fitness on and to share stories. Today was filled with stories by those who ran this last weekend’s CIM. Yes, 3 of the people who worked out today ran 26 point fucking 2 miles and still had the courage and discipline to get after it this morning. Shoutout to Katie, Brad 1.0 and McRunner for setting an example for the rest of us!

Today was a new workout, which McRunner might or might not have said “F@#$ You”. The workout involved pushups, zig-zag stairs on the West Steps, lunges and running.

The workout was fun and exciting to say the least.

Also during the workout we announced that 9RUN6 custom buffs are currently in the works. They will cost approximately between $10-12, it is a limited order so if you are interested please let us know ASAP.

Visualizing Finishing

This week was and is dedicated to the California International Marathon. With a majority of our members taking part in the CIM this weekend, we didn’t do anything crazy for our workouts, it was just an all running week with some stretching.

This morning the crew gathered at the normal spots for the running. The highlight of the morning was the 6:25AM crew that gathered at the west steps and made it’s way to 18th and L Street. From there we traveled down L Street and took the route of CIM for the finish.

We shared some stories (funny ones) on what to expect at this point in the race.

For everyone running the race this Sunday, may the course and training you have invested in be with you!

Don’t forget there are still a ton of events going on …

2016 Winter Challenge

The challenge is really pretty simple, all you have to do is stick to it! Figure out some sort of activity that you want to streak with (push-ups, running, walking, anything active that involves exercise), set a minimum numerical value to that movement (1-mi, 10 reps, 1 minute hold, etc) and do it every day from November 24, 2016 through December 31, 2016. Try to have a streak that is different than one that you have already done or are currently in. If you are doing a running streak maybe select some sort of body weight exercise like push-ups or pull-ups, etc. You get the picture now make the pledge….
1) Use the photo above and caption it announcing your commitment to staying fit from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or your blog and use hashtag #9run6
2) Hold yourself accountable by making the goal realistic. Your streak can be whatever you want but it has to have a minimum (such as 1 mile a day or 10 burpess, 1 minute plank) of WHATEVER YOU WANT! It’s your streak we just want to help you during the holiday season!
3) Announce that you completed your activity each day on social media …. here you can even cut and paste the following: I just did (ran , cycled) _______ to complete my daily commitment for #9run6 Winter Challenge.
4) Have fun with it, you can even post your commitment in the comments section below and check in on others to see how they are doing.
This is all about having fun while supporting one another achieve individual goals. It isn’t a competition, no matter if you run 1 mile or 10 miles a day or do 100 burpees or 10 pushups, keeping yourself active is all that matters!
Make the pledge and join the fun!

We Are Still Together …

Last night was a historical night as we had an election that pitted one candidate who has no government or military background and another the first female candidate for a major party. No matter who you were voting for, history was going to be changed in our country.

This morning was probably one of the first workouts where we talked politics between individuals during our running and workout. It created a new topic of conversation, the conversations were fairly serious in topic, but still in 9RUN6 fashion included some laughs and jokes.

If anything comes about from this historical election is we realize how important a positive and supportive community can be and how impactful it is for each individual. I mean look at the tremendous support and inspiration we get from one another. Our group really is filled with a lot of beautiful people and that is what we love about those who come to every workout or those who come occasionally.

We come out and workout no being judged on who we are or what we believe in, we bring together people of different genders, races, political parties, religions and lifestyles. We encourage not discourage one another to take chances and race races.

We have unique stories on how we became to become the person we are and who we want to be. The workouts are intense at times and easy on others, 9RUN6 has become a vehicle to bring together beautiful individuals and creating life long friends and memories in and out of our workouts.

We workout on government / political ground (the West Steps) which can sometimes separate people, but 9RUN6 brings people together. Each person who comes to a workout is loved and not judged … okay maybe laughs are shared at the expense of others, but it is all in good fun …

One thing is certain we need less politics and more workouts 🙂 …. so why not come out and be part of something awesome in our community.

It’s Friyay!

It’s Friday, so we hit up our destination Friday workout. Only if I had the same discipline to get up early like I do now when I was in college, when that 8AM class was such a struggle … I know many of you can relate to that one.

As we adult, we can appreciate the fact that when Friday mornings come around and that alarm goes off at o’dark thirty, we are excited to make our way to meet up with our homies at 9RUN6. After our two run groups made their way on various routes around downtown, we headed to the IMAX theater at 6:25AM to knock out another partner workout. Partner workouts are the best because it really pushes the team work in something that has individual health benefits.

With the streets still dark and the moon still out, we did the infamous workout that people used to not finish, now we wreck the workouts like it is something that is routine for us.

The partner workout for this morning was the burpees, lunges, jump squats and leg lifts for Partner A, and for Partner B it was wall sits, push ups, jumping jacks and planks. With running between each movement. When person A was done with their 20 movements, then B would switch over. After 2 sets were completed it was onto the next movement.

Just a reminder this weekend is Daylight Savings! Drop those clocks back an hour and get some extra enjoyment on the day. Also due to the Parkway closures there is no official organized long runs this weekend. So get your miles in and enjoy the journey!

Hoistees and Leapfrogs, oh my …

So when the alarm goes off, it’s time to rise … and get your a$$ to the West Steps for the 6:25AM workout or 10th and N Street if you are planning on getting out there for the running groups at 5:30AM and 6:00AM.

As the mornings stay darker from the night, it doesn’t stop the crew from getting out to get our dose of pouring of the liquid awesome. In fact this is when the toughness really starts to come out, and the strong establish themselves.

It’s always easier to hit the snooze button or just skip the workout if you aren’t training for anything specifically or if you just feel like sleeping in.

However, these are the days that really challenge us during the year. The Spring and Summer seasons, the sun comes out to greet us during the workout, but these Winter workouts suck from a scenery standpoint, I mean because it is dark out, there really isn’t much to see.

But we don’t come to the steps to run to see anything except for the faces of the awesome people who choose to come out and get their daily workout in. It’s actually one of the best morning sights, when people drive up and are ready to do work and prove to themselves that they are bad ass enough to tackle the workout set for that day.

This morning we welcomed a couple of new faces to the group that we introduced ourselves to last week who were at the West Steps taking a work photo. Courtesy of Ed, we had two new faces this morning, so hopefully they return. Welcome to the crew Jay and Patricia.

The workout for today was another awesome partner workout that involved hoistees, pushups, situps and leapfrogs, followed by a run around the West Lawn between each set. Exercises were performed in reps of 20 with a partner then followed by the run and repeated 3 times through. The group kicked the crap out of that workout this morning.

Way to go crew! We punched Wednesday morning square in the mouth and it is time to seize the rest of the day.

Have a great rest of your Wednesday!
