It’s in the core …

Sometimes we like to eat some humble pie to start off the weekend, it could be a slice or a whole pie at times. This morning was one of those workouts where everyone was like WTF?!?!?! … even before the workout started.

The workout today was supposed to be a total of 500 reps per person, as part of a partner workout, so yes 1,000 reps per group … 100 reps of the following exercises; push-ups, sit ups, leg lifts, lunges and squats. Most groups got to 300 reps, or 600 reps per group.

While one person was getting their strength workout on the other person was running laps around the round-a-bout on Capitol Mall. It was pretty awesome running around cheering one another on who were getting their rep counts on.

To close out the workout a couple kids in the group got some shit tagged today as they conquer the Fro-Yo run tomorrow, both Steven and Ernesto are going to be hitting up the run in West Sacramento with goals of their own. Steven is running both the 10k and the 5k, so running an unofficial 15k. While Ernesto has the lofty goal of running a personal best time in the 5k. We wish both of them luck in hopes to crush their goals, because we want everyone to set up their goals and crush them.

Reminder for those of you not racing tomorrow, we have our Saturday morning long run meet up group at 7AM. Tomorrow we will be meeting up a the same location as the previous two weekends at the Big Lots parking lot located at 8700 La Riviera Dr Sacramento.

CHALLENGE ANNOUCEMENT !!!!!

We are starting a plank-a-day challenge. The rules are simple … just plank every day and log it on the website. There is no minimum time required to plank, but we hope to see an increase in duration on how long you can plank for as the time passes over the course of days, weeks, and months. See how many days in a row you can get your plank in.

You can record your plank by visiting https://goo.gl/forms/pIEpCE0EwLTLhmVq2 or by clicking on the 9RUN6 Challenge tab each day.

Get planking!

Get outside that (comfort) zone

At 9RUN6 we like to push ourselves in various ways, sometimes it is as simple as getting up earlier that normal, running an extra quarter mile, running a set distance faster, or doing workouts that involve other people, like buddy workouts, where there is a lot of interaction during the workout. Like high-fives and assisted squats and jumping over one another in the form of a leap frog.

This morning we welcomed a new face to the group, Adam from Elk Grove. He came out 6 minutes late to the 5:30AM group so he was SOL when it comes to getting with the group in for that run, however he was able to connect with us at 10th & N Street for the 6:00AM group and joined us for the 6:25AM West Steps workout. He connected with probably one of the better people to be around for a first workout, that being Brad 1.0. Brad is a good dude who will take newbies under his wing to welcome them to the group. Not that we aren’t all good people, but he just isn’t so in your face like ummm me … actually it is probably pretty good to do a partner workout with anyone but me, when speaking of your first workout with 9RUN6, because let’s be honest, I probably can scare a few people away with my overly energetic welcoming to the group.

When it comes to pushing yourself, you have to put yourself out there. We can all want to be comfortable when it comes to working out, and for some days it is needed, but if you really want to feel the workout or see growth, mixing in something that will push you and make you feel like you want to quit is good for you. We all talk about taking on challenges whether that be in athletic performance or in life, however sometimes we don’t do enough to move outside of our own comfort zones. When you can start to escape your comfort zone, that is where awesome really happens.

It isn’t something we always think about or are willing to do, but we need to express ourselves more, not to show anyone else what we are capable of but to remind ourselves how awesome each individual is. At 9RUN6 we cary a wide array of people from front of the pack runners, middle of the pack, back of the pack, and just to stay fit folks. However, no one is in competition with one another, because at the end of the day we all want to see one another make it. I know it sounds crazy and maybe at times too good to be true, but 9RUN6 also provides us a reminder that there are good people out there in our communities, even with all of the craziness that goes on in our everyday life. We take ownership in one another’s goals, because if someone doesn’t make, as a group we feel a little more responsible on why that person didn’t hit their goal(s).

Often times we mistake easy / recovery days with comfortable. Not in the sense of comfortable running, but being too comfortable in our daily routine. When comfortable becomes too routine, then true awesomeness stops. It’s not that you are no longer awesome, but we all know there is a little more awesome placed inside each one of us.

Sometimes achieving awesome is what our real fear is, not the fear of failure, but the fear of raising the bar too high where maybe getting there again may not be as easy as it was the first time.

So today’s question … what is the road block you have or face that prevents you from reach that next level of awesomeness?

Get Your Miles In … McKinley Monday

When Monday rolls around, sometimes the easiest thing to do is to hit the snooze button. For some Monday on their marathon training schedule is a rest day, for others it is a recovery day. This morning the few kiddos that showed up wanted to get in some miles as part of their training plan, others just wanted to run.

The 5:30, 6 and 6:25AM groups are all about getting in some miles for Monday and to start the week off running. Today we came 3 people strong, with Monday being our newest added date it is understandable to have a low number, but keep in mind it is just about running and chatting. Today consisted of conversation about fun miles and plans to conquer to California International Marathon and other upcoming fall races like the Urban Cow Half Marathon.

After folks got their miles in, we spent some time doing some stretches. I mean let’s be honest, we all know how important stretching is, but we never really do it. Monday’s make us do it!

So if burpees and other crazy ass workouts scare you, come out and join us on Monday’s for some running, stretching and chatting.

It’s Friday … Where were you this a.m.?

Friday roles around and sometimes it’s easy to hit the snooze button. Which apparently most of the crew did this morning. It’s been over a year since we had a group this small, but nonetheless the crew kicked the crap out the workout this morning as we made a detour to the Sacramento Convention Center. Originally we were scheduled to make our way to the IMAX, however with some folks doing their thing on The Kay, we opted to move around them and head across the street.

We did the deck of cards workout from hell, which had us doing all kinds of various movements, from burpees to traveling movements.

When 4:30 or 5:00 or whatever time you have your alarm set, it might take some extra effort to get out of bed and head downtown. We all have choices, and sometimes listening to the body when you need rest is important, so we get that.

If you are set to take on the California International Marathon, come meet us tomorrow morning at 7AM at the Big Lots parking lot for some miles and some stretching. The address for the parking lot is 8700 La Riviera Dr . It is a 5 mile loop so you can get in as many miles as your need.  We hope to see you there tomorrow!

It’s time for the #9RUN6games!

In honor of the athletic competition currently going on in a South American country, we are holding our own set of games starting today and a winner(s) being decided next Friday. Yes, someone will win the gold, someone will get the silver, someone with the bronze and chances are someone might get the DFL (dead f@#$ing last) award.

Today’s games started with our normal runs at 5:30 and 6AM … then the partner workout with the 6:25AM at the west steps of the Capitol where we had some people in attendance to spectate, okay maybe not us, but they happened to be there when we took one of our photos, so we claim them to be ours, because we know they were watching us thinking … WTF are those folks doing? See them in the photo …

So the points system of the #9RUN6games are going to look something like this …

  • 1,000 points for just showing up
  • 10,000 points for busting your butt through a workout
  • 5,000 points for bringing a new member to a workout
  • 1,000 points for posting something about the #9RUN6games on social media
  • 20,000 points for posting a #PhelpsFace on your social media.
  • 1,000,000 points for creating an awesome synchronized exercise video and sharing it. Example below …

The #9RUN6 games are pretty simple … it is about just having some fun with some friends and social media. Show how much fun we have at 9RUN6 and how fitness doesn’t have to be so serious all the time.

Everyone Is Welcome!

It’s Monday so what better way to start the week than with your friends for a run. The case of the Mondays, can start Sunday evening, so let us help you by kicking off Monday and the rest of your week with some miles and a stretch. Yes, not every 9RUN6 workout involves burpees or some sort of crazy ass workout sometimes we just run and stretch. Like every single Monday!

Today we did just that with a small group of folks, we had a total of 5 people make their way to McKinley Park this morning. Most folks got between 4-7 miles to start their Monday, so why not join us?

I mean 9RUN6 welcomes everyone! On the Instagram we got the question, “What fitness level do you have to be at to start?” We never require anyone to have to start at a certain fitness level because everyone, and I mean everyone has to start somewhere. If you think, I’ll start working out with the group when I get fit enough, then the likely hood of us ever seeing you is not going to happen. Start your new goals with us NOW … make it a priority to get out on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday! Get out and let us help you reach your goals.

So how about committing now and tweeting, facebooking or instagraming that you will be coming out to a 9RUN6 workout!

This isn’t a special edition workout

This morning at 7AM was the first of many Saturday long run meet ups that will take place. Today we had a small group, but that happens until folks get their schedules in check. We had 3 peeps show up and put in between 5-10 miles for the day.

At 7AM the Saturday squad met at the Big Lots parking lot near the Watt Ave. access point for the American River. With the route today being around the Jed Smith loop getting in 5 miles was easy in regards to minimal turns and nothing to really obstruct your run.

If you are running CIM or Urban Cow, I would highly recommend getting out on Saturday mornings with us. Running with a group can have it’s benefits starting with accountability to show up and even can keep you honest on your pages for that day.

The first one takes commitment

The morning crew gathered with the regular times of 5:30, 6:00 and 6:25AM. With the 6:25AM gathering of the crew at the West Steps before heading to the other side of the Capitol, at the International Peace Garden.

Today’s workout was a partner workout, where one another helped each other through the workout with a lot of assisting, high-fives and using one another as an obstacles. The workout was a 20 minute AMRAP workout (As Many Rounds As Possible). Each set of exercises included a run between. The exercises for today were; hoisties (think squat jumps while holding your partner’s hands), partner push-ups (high-five at each up position), lead frog, and sit-ups (high-ten slap at the top of each rep). The photos below will show you what kind of went down this morning …

We always get the I’m going to try to be there tomorrow for the run part or the workout at 6:25AM. We will be honest, if you aren’t used to getting up early for a workout it is tough to get out there. It was tough for all of us at the beginning, but once it becomes part of the routine then the ability to get out there because easier and easier.

I’ll be honest, we all miss a workout every now and then because of life and the fatigue we get from it, but most people would agree that there is no greater feeling then running some miles and being challenged with a crazy but fun ass workout with some friends.

We aren’t asking you to commit to us for the first workout, but commit to yourself! Then after that and once you make some friends we become your accountabiliBUDDY (a word taken from Bojan, co-founder of November Project).

So when you decide you want to join us for your first workout, set your alarm(s). Yes, sometimes it takes multiple to make sure that you do get up. #JustBeThere for the workout and let us do the rest to help get you through a workout, after showing up it is on us to keep you and help you make the workouts part of your routine. We aren’t even saying you have to make every workout during the week. Start with one workout and make it routine for a few weeks, then add another, or even challenge yourself in your own way of setting goals. We have had members set goals like, “Making 12 workouts in 6 weeks”. With 4 meet-ups during the week you have plenty off opportunities to allow us to help you reach your goal. Remember, call us crazy, but we want everyone to make it!

For those who attend on a regular basis or those have been to at least 2, share how your first one was a challenge and how you keep yourself going to more workouts as they become part of your routine in the comments section below, then share this post with all of your friends.

Like a Ninja

The crew came out strong like a ninja this morning, some new faces, some old faces, and some who frequent us on occasion. Let’s start off by welcoming Emily and Hiro to the group! Welcome to the cult … jokingly, but serious at the same time.

During the workout we came 16 people deep at one point, slowly growing and getting closer to the goal of 30 then eventually 100 peeps sweating it out together. Come on people let’s get 100 people together … think about how awesome that would be!

Once the posse gathered at the West Steps today, we did another partner based workout. It is amazing the strides people are making as we visit these same workouts pretty regularly. When we first saw the workout, it was known as the DNF workout … groups are getting closer and closer to making this workout owned! Most groups fell just one rep short of shutting it down before the 7AM end time. The workout included some tree sits, burpees, lunges, push ups, jump squats, planks, jumping jacks, and leg lifts, while mixing in some running in between.

The squad will gather again on Friday … WILL YOU BE THERE?

So back to growing the crowd … back in 2014 when the first meet up started on a dark Wednesday morning at McKinley Park, sometimes only 3 people would show up, now we have 12 pretty regular faces, with the hopes to continually grow in numbers. The more people, the more fun, laughs and chatter to be had not to mention the motivation and inspiration from one another through the workouts and in life.

Some of the people in the crew have become the closest of my friends because let’s face it when a person continues to come back, there is more time to hear one each person’s unique story. The more you hear about someones failures and successes puts us closer to one another. Eventually, we want to help one another succeed.

I mean call us crazy but we want everyone to make it. There is no competition with 9RUN6 only motivation. Each person is unique in their own way, and the rest of the crew is willing to help one another do what they do and do that thing at the best of their ability in both athletic and in life.

My challenge to everyone that LOVES 9RUN6 is to invite their friends and share with them how 9RUN6 has helped them! In fact, share your story below in the comments section. We joke that it is a cult, but we are more than just a workout group, the members who are willing to express themselves become family!

Have a great day everyone!
