Another West Steps Wednesday

IMG_6622.jpg

It’s another Wednesday morning and the group begins to gather at 5:30AM … this group is starting to come together strong … but not as strong as the 6AM group that met at 10th & N Street. Today the 6AM group was stronger than the 6:25AM group in terms of numbers, however in terms of physical strength when it comes to the workout for today, the winner has to be the 6:25AM group …

This morning we did the #ThanksKatie workout … yup because Katie is the one who suggested the format of the workout … which makes it really tough … not only do we go through the workout once, but we climb up the workout then we scale it back down like a ladder …

here’s the workout

Yup once the workout was done in about 20 minutes everyone was ready to start their day. The group even admitted this morning that even though sometimes it is a pain in the ass to get up on a Wednesday morning once the workout is done and the rest of the day falls into place it is well worth the early morning wake up and jump start.

Get to the Memorial

The 5:30 and 6:00AM groups seem to be the popular groups as of late. This morning we had a gathering of 13 people getting approx. 5 miles in during these times. The group is really starting to grow and momentum is growing. We even saw our old friend Judy, who gave a commitment to join us this morning! Now we just gotta find a way to get Cakes aka Ernesto back into the mix.

Once the group finished up with the typical run down towards 28th Street with the 5:30 group then out and back through Old Sacramento to the West Steps with the 6:00AM group, it was time to get our Destination Deck workout on at 6:25AM. Today the group made our way to the Memorial Auditorium on J Street.

The deck of cards workout for today, was similar to other Fridays with Faces and Aces equaling 11 reps of each exercise, while the numbers equaled that value. Pull a Joker and you doubled up on the next card. The exercises for today were jump ups onto about a 16-inch step, sits-ups and push-ups. Today’s winner with the best hand after 10 rounds was Shane, who had 4 Queens with an Ace high … the winner gets to pull 3 cards, we add the total and everyone else has to do the exercises once again … today he pulled a total of 26 which made everyone enjoy 26 more jump ups, push-ups and sit ups.

With the liquid awesome pouring, it was time to start each individual’s Friday. Everyone have an awesome weekend and see you all next Wednesday!

Bouncing balls … ping pong balls …

The crew gathered on the typical Wednesday morning … and we are coming strong with the 5:30AM group, gaining more with the 6:00AM group and finishing even stronger with the 6:25AM group. The last few weeks we have seen some new faces at the workouts, one of the worries with new faces is how many return consistently? Well today we had some of last week’s new faces come back for a second time / second workout! We saw Shane, Kristen, and Jersey Chris return. We also saw a familiar faces return after a number of months missing in action … yup Sacramento’s very own 40 under 40 award winner Benny came through today for a working once again … we also saw the return of Derrick … aka my long lost brother from another mother …  we hope to see them grinding it out more often with us again.

The 5:30AM group started off at the normal meeting spot of 10th & N St, where we headed down N Street up to 28th and returned back down Capitol Mall … logging in about 3 miles to return back to the corner to pick up the 6:00AM group … the that group gathered we made our way to the Tower Bridge where, we picked up McRunner before heading back to the West Steps completing the 2 mile route.

With 6:25AM on the clock the squad was ready to get to the body weight exercises and really pouring some liquid awesome! The ping pong ball workout is really simple … each person grabs a ball that has various exercises and reps written onto them … on the count of 3 everyone bounces their ping pong ball onto the ground and snatches another out of the air … the one you grab determines your specific exercise for that round … after each round a lap around the west lawn area is completed and it all happens again and again for about 25 minutes worth of running and body weight exercises.

We have fun, we get fit, and we do it all for free … so what’s your excuse to not join us? See you Friday at 5:30, 6 or 6:25AM or for all of them….

To the IMAX!

Destination Friday’s are the F’ing best, especially when new awesome peeps come and join us.

The 5:30 and 6:00 AM groups seem to become just as popular as the 6:25 group. The new faces that joined us today were Kristin and “Jersey” Chris. Both starting strong with the 5:30 group knocking out some miles and joining in with the early morning chatter and banter. If you didn’t get a chance to come out and meet these two awesome folks make sure to check them out at another workout coming up.

pulling cards …

When 6:25AM rolled around we had completed about 5 miles with the two run meet up groups. We tacked on a bit more by making our way down to the IMAX on K Street. The deck of cards workout for today was pretty standard with 10 rounds of pulling cards and doing some work. Faces and Aces were 11, the joker doubled the work of the next card pulled, and each number card was just straight up.

After ten rounds completed, it was time to call it a day … one question WTF is it always windy when we go to the IMAX?!?! Nonetheless, still an awesome morning to get the workout completed and get the day started.

Also we love it when people end workouts with a commitment! Today at the end of the workout I asked “Jersey” Chris, “See you next Wednesday?” … he responded with “Yes” … as many of you know if he doesn’t show up … he gets a shout out!

This is “Jersey” Chris … we hope for his better judgement he shows up on Wednesday.

We don’t even have a name for it.

The group that gathered this morning at 5:30AM was pretty solid … Then we added a couple more at 6:00 … Covering almost 5 miles in total before the 6:25 meet up at the west steps some could say that the workout could be called a day … Not with us!

Today’s workout didn’t even have a name to it that’s how badass the workout was … Honestly I couldn’t even remember what all was in it in regards to the order. I know there was a crap ton of jump ropes, some insane amount of squats mixed in with some randomness of high knees and butt kickers. Today’s workout was like as if a painter took out a soda can shook it up, opened it and a baby elephant came out … Yup doesn’t make any sense. Today’s workout was kinda like that …but one thing was certain it kicked all of our asses.

Wondering why there aren’t any photos on the blog or on Facebook? Ask Brian aka RUN BMC to post some pictures. Dude is being a hog and not sharing them when he took them on his phone.

When it Rains, find a tunnel

#DestinationFriday fell upon again today, this time taking the early group through a 5 mi run in the rain, while enjoying the serenity which a downtown provides between 5:30am and 6:25am prior to our 6:25 destination, the Old Sac tunnel.

As our core group has continued to maintain their commitment to the pre-workout runs, we have slowly begun to add some new people this morning. Today we welcomed Dan from West Sac. This now means that McRunner Chris is no longer our only person from West Sac. What this means for the rest of us on the other side of the river is we are being infiltrated by the 530. Or shall I say #5Free0

Today’s workout featured 2 things, lot’s of rain and professional photography. Yep, photos of our workout will be uploaded at a later date but they’ll be legit. This weekend or early next week, we’ll be able to show proof of our Deck of Cards workout with great style. 10 rounds of Mountain Climbers, Lunges, and Crunches with the card face value representing the reps.

4 Aces by Sarah Green was the winning hand today, which enabled her to pass along an additional 25 reps to the rest of the group.

#HappyRunnings

55 to 5 … Yessir

Most people are all about my car goes 0 to 60 in ___. At 9run6 we ain’t got no time for that cause we too busy getting fit, hustling to get our sweat on, dropping hammers and smiling.

Today we broke out an awesome workout that had a blast from the past… The fifty five to five workout.

It goes like this … Each set starts with jumping jacks, first set at 55… Then a set of 55 squats. Each round goes down by 5 with the jacks being partnered with either squats, sit ups or push ups. Between each change of numbers we mix in a run from the steps down to the 10th street sidewalk and back.

With music playing the group gets shit done while people believe in their lame ass excuses why they can’t workout in the morning.

With the workout done, we drop the mic and walk away to start our daily routine of being awesome.

#DestinationFriday takes the Crest

IMG_3342

It’s 2016 and #DestinationFriday is in full effect. This week after the #BreakfastClub put in some miles, we met at the step of the Capitol and ran a couple of blocks over to K Street. Our destination was the Crest Theatre, right across the street from the California Family (CalFit) Fitness. If you’re wondering, CalFit provides sun-less spray tans, a full bar, lounge and anything else that not related to just living a healthy life and enjoying the relationships which come along with.

War was the name of the game today and we had a couple of new faces to join us for some dirty dancing (more on this in a second). We’re growing, up by 7 in the past week and damn proud of the folks that have been coming out for a great mission #FunFreeFitness.

Finally, congrats to all our 2015 award winners.

PS.

Dirty Dancing, yes that one, the one with the great soundtrack which includes Hungry Eyes, will be playing at the Crest Theater.

New Year New Faces

Since the 2nd year anniversary of 9RUN6 we have seen a number of new faces! This is exciting for a couple of reason, it’s help the group grow but more importantly there are awesome people getting fit and making an effort to workout.

Last Wednesday we had two new folks join us, Rachel and Sarah. Today those two awesome folks returned and brought one of their friends with them!

Welcome to the crew ladies, now let’s make it official by bringing a shirt we can tag with the 9RUN6 logo next week!

For today’s workout we sloshed around the west steps doing the famous or infamous ping pong ball workout. We took the rep count and did a multiplier of two … You know as they say double to the torture double the fun …

With 30 minutes in the books the crew got a solid workout. Everyone have a kick-ass day!

BREAKING NEW: We hit 2 years!

The first Wednesday at 6:25AM a group met up at McKinley Park back in 2014. The group started as a solid 3 people for the first meet up and has grown to over 20 members at any given workout! The group has gone through some changes going from 9RUN6 to November Project Sacramento then back to 9RUN6 …

A big thanks to Chris McDaniel who was been there from the beginning of the workouts seeing us go from McKinley Park to the River Front and now the West Steps of the Capitol.

As the group continues to meet up and workout we continue to have plenty of fun on Wednesday and Friday mornings going from a single workout at 6:25AM to having 3 official times two days a week now.

The goal of getting 100 people at a single workout is still out there. With that in mind if we get 100 people … Chris Malenab (ME) will get the 9RUN6 logo tattooed on my leg.

Continue to spread the word of the FREE FITNESS Mission and get people out there waking up early and sweating it out together.
